How Do I…
- Request a book that is already checked out?
If an item is currently checked out to someone else, you can put a hold on it by logging into the library catalog, searching for the book, and then clicking the “Request” button that appears on the item record webpage. The patron with item checked out then has up to seven days to return the book to the library. You will be emailed as soon as the item has been returned and it is available for you to check out.
- Cite a source?
EndNote Web is a a Web-based tool for managing and citing references in papers and creating bibliographies. To get started click on the Databases A-Z list on the Libraries homepage; click on EndNote Web. If you need help, view the tutorial on EndNote Web. For additional help and examples the Center for Writers provides free, one-on-one writing consultations for all members of the NDSU community: students, faculty, and staff.
- Research newspapers?
Newspaper articles can be a good source of up-to-date information on virtually any topic. They are also considered to be primary sources since they are often the first published account of an event. To find newspaper articles, try searching online indexes available on the newspaper guide.
- See what I have checked out?
If you log into the Library catalog, you can see what items you have checked out, renew and request items.
- Find the most appropriate databases to use?
If you know which subject area you want to search in, you could use the Research Guides by Subject link located under Get Help. Otherwise you can conduct a simultaneous search of multiple online databases by clicking on Articles tab in the upper-left corner of the Library website. Enter your subject terms in the search box and click Search
- Request an item from the Off Campus Storage (Annex)?
NDSU Faculty, Staff and Students may request material by using the Off Campus request form (note: this is the preference for requesting PDF or photocopies) or by using the “Request Select Item” feature in the library catalog for a physical copy. Off Campus materials are available for use by visitors. Please e-mail ndsu.library.pull@ndsu.edu to request items.
Note: Requested documents, if available, will be delivered within 24 hours and can be picked up at the Circulation desk in the Main Library.
- Check out a study room?
Group study rooms are available at the library. Groups of two to six students may check out a key for a study room at the Circulation Desk. The room will be checked out for four hours and can be renewed for additional time if no other groups are waiting for a room. The group study rooms can also be reserved in advance. Make arrangements by stopping at the Circulation Desk or calling 231-8888. If a reserved room is not used within 30 minutes of the reservation, it may be made available to others.
- Check out a book if I am not a NDSU student, faculty, or staff member?
The library building and its collections are open to the general public. Tri-College students, staff, and faculty may check out materials with an institutional ID. Community members may check out materials by obtaining an NDSU Libraries Special Permit available at the Main Library Circulation Desk or at the Branch Libraries.
- Find out if a book came in from InterLibrary Loan (ILL)?
The ILL department should email your NDSU account when your library items have arrived. You can also call the ILL service desk at 231-8885.
