The index includes information regarding name; country of emigration; dates of the "First Papers" (declaration of intention) and "Second Papers" (naturalization); and, the county district court where the proceedings occurred.
The original records are preserved at the State Historical Society of North Dakota. All have been micofilmed. For additional information on the history of the naturalization laws and types of records, consult the State Historical Society's Naturalization Records page.
The Institute has microfilm copies of the records for the southeastern North Dakota counties of Barnes, Cass, Dickey, Griggs, La Moure, Ransom, Richland, Sargent, Steele, Stutsman, and Traill. (Microfilm JK1822.N9)
The Institute can provide copies only for the counties listed above. To order copies for other counties in North Dakota please consult our information page. The Institute does offer a fee-based copy service for the public. The cost is $5.00 per naturalized individual which includes mailing and handling. You can obtain copies of a naturalization records held by the Institute by contacting the us via e-mail NDSU.Library.Archives@ndsu.edu or regular mail.
