Schmeckfest documentary comments

Electronic mail message from Marci Mayer Radin, Englewood, Colorado, December 29, 2005

My father was Lyle Vernon Mayer, born 1916 in Ashley, ND; his parents, Hulda Becker (1886) and Emil Joseph Mayer; her father, Christian Becker. We have quite an interesting story from the North Dakota Historical Society about Christian Becker settling in (a county that I don't remember off the top of my head) North Dakota and founding the school and the town clerkship, etc. Hulda was one of about 8 children - Stella Becker, the wife of Hulda's youngest brother, Enoch Becker, is still alive at 105! and living in California.

LOVED the Schmeckfest tape - what an adorable bunch of folks! The food looked so yummy. My grandmother, Hulda Becker Mayer, was quite the cook also. Unfortunately, we lived so far away that I didn't see her too often, let alone learn to cook from her, but I do have a memory of when she visited us in Maryland - I would have been about 3 or 4 - and she made strudel, using the entire dining room table to lay out the dough. She would also make a sour cream/apple coffee cake that she couldn't make just one, she made 2, 3, 4 at a time. My grandfather was the manager of the Dakota Maid flour mill in Grand Forks and Daddy says it was a long time before she finally admitted that store-bought bread was OK. The one thing I do make is what we call "buttonlies" - buttons, of course - I don't know how the "-lies" got added on - but we do a pot full of those smothered in fried onions and served with pork ribs and sauerkraut. My mouth is watering just writing about 'em.

Thanks for everything - I'll be visiting your website again, I'm sure! Happy New Year! - Marci
