Litke Family History

Written by George Shoning
Grandson of Lydia Litke Pankonin

June 2007

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, members of the Litke family migrated from Germany to Poland to Volhynia (Russia) to the USA and to Canada in search of a better life for themselves and their descendents. Not only did the Litkes move halfway around the world, but they also changed religions along the way – from Lutheran to Baptist.

The earliest records for the Litkes are the birth and marriage records of a Friedrich Litke, born in Germany in the late 18th century. One of Friedrich’s children, Johann, made his way to Poland where he married Julianna Kurz near Lodz in 1839. Both Johann and Julianna were weavers. One of their children, Karl, was born in 1852.

At this time, the Litke family appears to be Lutherans. However, during the rise of the Baptist movement in Poland, records show that Karl became a Baptist and even founded a Baptist youth group in Lodz in 1872. Karl Litke married Maria Mathilde Scher and had nine children. Karl must have been a genealogist because he recorded a Birth Register for his entire family. From the birth places of his children, we see that Karl moved his family from Lodz to Volhynia over a period of a few years, perhaps with the promise of land and religious freedom in Volhynia.

In the early 20th century, perhaps to escape Russian persecution, the five youngest of Karl’s children -- Alwine, Julius, Gustav, Karl, and Maria -- emigrated from Volhynia to the USA and Canada. Later in the 20th century, Karl’s daughter Lydia’s children -- Anna, Leopold, and Alwine -- driven by Russian persecution, emigrated with their own children to the USA and Canada.

Moving in the 19th and early 20th century was a difficult undertaking. The Litkes risked their lives as they made their way across a vast country of open spaces. They learned a new language, built homes, established churches, and survived illnesses – all without the support of extended family and friends. As their descendents, living comfortable lives in the USA and Canada, we thank them for their foresight and perseverance in undertaking this difficult migration.

This Elsa Scherer must be a sister to Maria Mathilde Scher/er, however we have no records past Maria's birth recorded by her husband Karl Litke.
We do not know how these folks fit in the family. The names Scherer and Firus are listed.
Gustav Litke is the son of Karl Litke and Maria Mathilde Scher/er.
Gustav and Julius are the sons of Karl Litke and Maria Mathilde Scher/er.
Gustav and Elizabeth (Kohl) Litke. They lived in Alberta, Canada.
The man on the right is Robert Oskar Litke. I do not know who the older lady is in front of him. Couple on the left are Hugo Litke and his wife Otilie (I believe last name is Zilkie). Hugo is the son of Karl Litke and Maria Mathilde Scher/er.
The couple on the left are Henry Schubert and his wife Alwine (Alvina) Litke. Alvina is the daughter of Karl Litke and Maria Mathilde Scher/er. The couple on the right are Johann Fischer and his wife Christine Dickhaut. The Fischer's never lived in the United States so this photo had to have taken sometime before Henry and Alvina came over. The Schubert's actually came over two times. The first time about 1906 and the second time about 1910.
