German Couple Visited in Hebron

"German Couple Visited in Hebron." Hebron Herald, 9 August 1995.

Hebron had very special guests recently when Ruth and Stefan Kloetzel of the Landsmannschaft der Deutschen aus Russland of Stuttgart, Germany visited here. They were accompanied by Professor Michael Miller, North Dakota State University.

The Kloetzels visited for a time at the Brick City Senior Center and then spent several hours chatting with guests in the basement of the Hebron city hall where the Vorvaters Kinder served kuchen, punch, and coffee.

The Landsmannschaft is a German-Russian organization headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. Mrs. Kloetzel was the featured speaker at the Germans from Russia Heritage Society’s 25th Anniversary Convention that was held in Bismarck in July.

She heads the social welfare programs including the immigration to Germany of ethnic Germans from the former Soviet Union. Close to 200,000 Russian-Germans immigrate to Germany each year since 1991 from Siberia, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Many of these people have relatives in the Dakotas.

Professor Miller and the Kloetzels toured several German-Russian sited including a visit to the McIntosh County Museum in Ashley, ND. They also visited the McPherson County Museum in Eureka, S.D.

The Kloetzels spoke no English and Professor Miller assisted in translating their words.

They also visited the St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Strasburg, ND where a program entitled “The Immigrants and Their Church” was presented.

From Hebron the group visited at the Assumption Abbey in Richardton and in Dickinson.
