50 Years Back: Good-bye to my Home Village Selz

Vor 50 Jahren: Abdschied von Meinem Heimarort Selz

Jundt, Raphael. "50 Years Back: Good-bye to my Home Village Selz." Volk auf dem Weg, April 1994, 7.

Translation from the original German to American English by Alex Herzog, Boulder, Colorado

For the last time I was standing up there,
Looking down onto the Kutschurgan Valley.
Below me lay the village of Selz
Like a Queen in her grave.

With its vineyards and fertile fields,
Stretching along the edge of the liman,
There lay the village of Selz,
Familiar to all, far and wide.

With its beautiful church and homes,
There it lay in its full glory.
There I spent my youth,
As if in a dream.

Then came those difficult days
When I had to leave you!
When I had to roam the whole wide world,
Ever moving from place to place.

And you, my beloved Selz,
You remain behind -- all alone.
You could not accompany me,
And I was not allowed to return.

Our appreciation is extended to Alex Herzog for translation of this article.
