Gary Totten to speak about consumer culture and gender expectations

Consumer Culture and Gender Expectations

Gary Totten, Chair of the English Department, will discuss consumer culture as depicted in Edith Wharton’s early 20th-century novels “Bunner Sisters” and “Summer”. He will examine the challenges consumer culture creates for the novels’ female characters and draw parallels to similar issues in contemporary society.

This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
